Applications that live on the web, not on a device

Web applications are not your regular apps that function on mobile devices. They are applications that reside on remote servers and are delivered to the device over the internet. This has simple accessibility and does not need to be downloaded. It functions through a network with a web browser like Firefox, Chrome or Safari.

The development of web applications is not as complicated or detail oriented as websites. The process is similar to that of websites with a front-end and back-end development, but the process is shorter than websites. Most web applications use JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and HTML5 as development languages.

Front-end and server-side programming

The front-end development begins with the browser of choice being referred by the client to the developer. HTML programming aims to display the outlook of the web application and its content, CSS ensures that the displayed content is in the right format and is accessible, while JavaScript runs the code on the application to make sure that the displayed information or page is interactive.

The second stage of the programming is called server-side programming. This is used to create scripts that are used by web applications. These scripts are written using Ruby, Java and Python. Databases for these web applications can be stored using MySQL or MongoDB.

Some examples of web applications are online forms (Google Forms), shopping carts, word processors, spreadsheets, video and photo editing, file conversion, file scanning, and email programs such as Gmail, Yahoo and AOL.
